Sheer Brute Obstinacy

Evolved from Superstition, my first antweight, Sheer Brute Obstinacy's name was inspired by a comment by a commentator at RCRA. I figured it was enough of a departure from SS's design to merit a new name altogether, and it's nice to have a more apt name for my robot.

SBO will feature:

  • Moderate speed at 3ft/s top speed
  • A very wide aluminum plow
  • A hinged chromoly steel back wedge.. with sharp edges!
  • As always, invertibility and hopefully traction
  • Mysteriously inappropriate parts which strangely coincide with another ant design I'm working on

SBO is being developed as a 1-lb fighting robot entry for SECR's Robot Assault 2004, to be held in Huntsville, AL on Labor Day Weekend in 2004.

NEW! (As of 8/14/2004)

Bot's built! It has a few problems, especially with the wheels staying on and weight issues, but as you can see it looks all right.

(8/1/2004) Again, Dad, Noah and I made a significant amount of progress on the bot. This time we used sticker paper to mark the holes-to-be-drilled. Worked pretty well, I might recommend it if you don't have remarkably close tolerances, but I'd better wait until I finish the bot to see how well it worked.

(7/29/2004) With the help of our neighbor and friend Noah Sanders, Dad and I cut most of the pieces to SBO today. We cut twice as much as necessary.
Verdicts on materials:
2024 Aluminum: easy to machine, as usual.
Chromoly steel: about as easy to machine as 2024, nice.
Lexan: fairly easy to machine, using wood blades.
UHMW Polyethylene: the surprise for me - cuts like butter, but this actually made it hard to follow my line! (Pictures coming soon)

(7/24/2004) SBO's pile of parts. How could such a thing be created from such a strange assortment of objects? ..Find out, starting tomorrow!
